Is 40 Too Old for Braces?
Absolutely not. If you're 40—or even older—you are not too old to improve your smile or correct your bite.
One of the biggest misconceptions about orthodontics is that braces are primarily for teenagers. In reality, adults can successfully undergo orthodontic treatment as long as their teeth, gums, and supporting bone are healthy enough for treatment.
At Impressions Orthodontics in Calgary, we offer orthodontic options for adults, including Damon metal braces as well as clear aligners such as Spark. The right option depends on your teeth, bite, goals, and overall oral health.
Why Are More Adults Getting Braces?
You may have thought about straightening your teeth for years but simply never made it a priority.
Perhaps you had braces as a teenager and your teeth have shifted. Maybe your teeth have gradually become more crowded. Or perhaps you've always been unhappy with your smile but assumed orthodontic treatment was something you should have done when you were younger.
You're not alone.
At Impressions Orthodontics, adult patients may seek treatment for both cosmetic and functional reasons. Our Smile Touch-Up program, for example, is designed for adults who may want to make smaller improvements to their smile or correct changes that occurred after previous orthodontic treatment.
Can Teeth Still Move at 40?
Yes.
Teeth can be moved orthodontically throughout adulthood. However, adult treatment is different from treating a growing child or teenager.
When you're an adult, your jaw bones have finished growing, so orthodontics generally focuses on moving the teeth within the existing bone and correcting the bite, rather than using growth to influence jaw development.
This is one reason why an individualized diagnosis is so important.
What If My Teeth Have Shifted Since I Had Braces?
This is one of the most common reasons adults return for orthodontic treatment.
You may have worn braces when you were younger, but stopped wearing your retainer—or your teeth may have gradually changed over the years.
This is known as orthodontic relapse.
Retainers are an important part of maintaining your result after treatment. At Impressions Orthodontics, Dr. Nizam prescribes retainers following orthodontic treatment to help maintain tooth position.
What Are My Options at Age 40?
You don't necessarily have to choose traditional metal braces.
Spark Clear Aligners
Spark aligners are a removable, discreet option for appropriate cases. They can be especially appealing if you don't want visible braces during work, social events, or everyday activities.
Is Adult Orthodontic Treatment More Difficult?
Not necessarily—but adults can have considerations that younger patients don't.
Before starting treatment, your orthodontist needs to evaluate factors such as:
- Gum health
- Bone and periodontal support
- Existing dental work
- Missing teeth
- Previous orthodontic treatment
- Bite and jaw relationships
- Tooth wear
- Crowding or spacing
At Impressions Orthodontics, the consultation includes photographs, an iTero scan and any necessary X-rays to help Dr. Nizam evaluate your teeth, bite, bone structure, roots, jaw joints and other factors relevant to treatment planning.
How Long Will Braces Take at 40?
There isn't one treatment time that applies to every adult.
Treatment length depends on what needs to be corrected, how complex the case is, the treatment approach selected, and how well the patient follows instructions.
Some adults may need comprehensive orthodontic treatment, while others may be candidates for a shorter Smile Touch-Up treatment focused on specific cosmetic concerns. Impressions' Smile Touch-Up program typically ranges from 6–12 months for appropriate cases.
What If I Only Want to Fix My Front Teeth?
This is an important question to discuss with your orthodontist.
If your bite is healthy and your concerns are primarily cosmetic, a limited treatment approach may sometimes be possible.
However, simply straightening the front teeth without considering the bite can create problems. A proper orthodontic assessment should determine whether limited treatment is appropriate—or whether comprehensive treatment would provide a better long-term result.
So, Is 40 Too Old for Braces?
No.
Forty can actually be a great time to start.
You may have more control over your schedule, understand your treatment goals better, and be ready to make an investment in yourself that you weren't ready to make at 15.
Whether you're looking for a complete orthodontic correction, considering clear aligners, or simply want to improve a few teeth that have shifted over the years, the first step is understanding your options.
