What is Gum Recession?

What Is Gum Recession?

  • The gum line moves away from the crown of the tooth, making teeth look longer or uneven
  • Exposed roots can be sensitive to hot, cold, or touch
  • Can lead to higher risk of decay on the root surface and gum disease if untreated

Common Causes of Gum Recession

  • Aggressive tooth brushing or using a hard-bristled brush
  • Periodontal (gum) disease — infection damages gums and bone
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Genetics — some people have thinner or weaker gums
  • Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism)
  • Misaligned teeth or bite issues
  • Tobacco use
  • Orthodontic treatment (rare, if teeth move too quickly or improperly)
  • Piercings (lip or tongue) irritating gums

Symptoms of Gum Recession

  • Teeth look longer or roots exposed
  • Sensitivity to temperature changes or sweets
  • Visible notches near gum line
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums (if disease is present)

Treatment Options

  • Improved oral hygiene & gentle brushing
  • Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) if gum disease is present
  • Gum graft surgery to restore lost tissue in severe cases
  • Orthodontic treatment to correct bite or alignment that causes recession
  • Night guards for grinding/clenching

Why It Matters

If untreated, recession can lead to:
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Higher risk of cavities at roots
  • Gum infection or periodontitis
  • Tooth mobility or loss in severe cases
