While having braces, what should I not eat?
- May 1, 2025
When you have braces, it’s important to avoid certain foods that could potentially damage your braces or increase the risk of cavities. Here’s a list of foods to avoid:

- Sticky and Chewy Foods: These include caramel, taffy, gummy candies, chewing gum, and even some dried fruits. These can get stuck in your braces and be difficult to remove, potentially causing damage.
- Hard Foods: Hard foods such as nuts, hard candies, ice cubes, and crunchy snacks like popcorn kernels can break wires and brackets.
- Chewy Bread: Avoid crusty or chewy bread like bagels and pizza crusts, as they can bend wires or get stuck in brackets.
- Tough Meats: Tough meats, such as steak and some types of jerky, can be difficult to chew and may damage your braces.
- Corn on the Cob: Eating corn on the cob can damage wires and brackets. It’s better to cut the corn off the cob before eating.
- Hard Fruits and Vegetables: Some raw fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots should be cut into small, bite-sized pieces rather than biting directly into them.
- Sugary and Acidic Foods: Sugary foods and drinks (like soda, candy, and sweets) can contribute to tooth decay and cavities. Acidic foods and drinks (like citrus fruits and juices) can erode tooth enamel.
- Chewing on Non-Food Items: Avoid chewing on pens, pencils, or fingernails, as this can also damage your braces.
